Lacrimosa
Øystein Sevåg

Lacrimosa marks Øystein Sevåg’s first band album in 15 years. Øystein continues his musical alchemy project: fusing European art music with improvisation to create a powerful, uplifting force. Lacrimosa means “tear.” Sevåg says the music is meant for those who need relief, inspiration, or a renewed faith in the future, in a time when the world is struggling to come together.

A requiem for the planet
The music on Lacrimosa has roots in Western polyphonic art music, with branches toward rhythmic improvisational music and something Nordic. Keywords are melodic and polyphonic, sacred and powerful.
On the album, an international top team of musicians from the worlds of jazz and classical music meet, musicians who have a deep understanding of both classical art music and rhythmic improvisational music.

The British-Swedish bassoonist Emily Hultmark (formerly principal bassoonist in the Philharmonia Orchestra, London, and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra) has a central place on the album. Also included are Sevåg’s old friends from the Global House album, such as Bendik Hofseth (saxophone) and Rune Arnesen (drums), as well as a number of other strong names from Norway and abroad: Mats Eilertsen (bass), Sara Övinge (violin), Hanne Moe Skjelbred – viola, Elisa Herbig and Gregor Riddell – cello, and the North Macedonia Symphony Orchestra.
